Unlike the period kitchens, modern ones have no set rules and guidelines. Modern kitchen designs are many and suit many purposes that are a part of the current living style. While designing a modern kitchen many people do the mistake of buying various new appliances and crowding the kitchen. Most of these appliances would later become totally useless. Such overcrowding of the kitchen will never make it useful or even beautiful. When you go for a modern kitchen there are a few factors to keep in mind.

  • Decide on the layout of the kitchen. Think about whether you want the kitchen to be enclosed or open. Most of the modern kitchens open to the living rooms, thus closing the gap between the family activities and the kitchen work.
  • Have a kitchen island that would serve for different purposes. Whether to items, read books, eat food or work on laptop, kitchen islands are highly useful and are an important part of the modern kitchen design.
  • Go for neutral colours like cream, light grey or just white. Dark colours can be quite over whelming, especially if the kitchen is small. Moreover, they can make the kitchen dark. Lighter shades on the other hand can make the kitchen bright and beautiful.
  • Have a proper layout that gives you ample space to walk. At the same time they should be close enough so that you can get all the items you want fast enough. Most importantly, make sure that the main three items in a kitchen, the oven, the refrigerator and washing area, are close enough.
  • Provide adequate lighting. Dark kitchens create a gloomy atmosphere. Over-bench lights, pendants, etc. can make the work space really bright. Similarly, ceiling lights with dimmers can provide adequate lighting while relaxing with snacks in the kitchen.

Everybody has their own preferences when it comes to kitchen designs. You may prefer a traditional country kitchen with an aga and flagstone floor and real wood units. Or you might like a more modern and contemporary look. There are many things to think about, such as where to fit the sink, the oven and the fridge, which colour schemes you like and which materials suit your kitchen design. It is also important when planning your new kitchen, to look at the practical side of things. You might like the idea of a big range style cooker, but if your kitchen is on the small side, an oven which is fitted into the surfaces is probably a better option. You also need to take note of the layout of your kitchen; where the sink is in relation to the oven, and where the doors and windows are in the room. You need your kitchen to be practical, easy to use and safe, at the same time as being comfortable and decorated to your taste.

Another obvious and important factor to think about when designing your new kitchen is your price band. It can be easy to choose your units and furnishings and appliances within your price band, but then slip over the edge with hidden costs and extra necessities.

Understanding How Interior Design Companies Work: Lighting for Mood Part III – Dimmable Designs

Interior Design Companies understand the term “mood” to mean a barely-definable, abstract quality that makes us feel “in tune” with our surroundings. In London, lighting is often a critical part of an interior design company’s toolbox in creating the perfect mood. In this series which I call “Lighting for Mood,” I will draw on my experience working with some of London’s top interior design companies to describe current best practices in this exciting area of design.

The principle way in which interior design companies will control lighting is by dimming the various levels in relation to each other. General lighting, whether in the form of table lamps, up-lights or down-lights, should be controlled separately from feature lighting – especially in older London residences where there is a danger of overloading electrical circuits. By day, relative contrasts are less marked, especially given London’s rainy weather patterns. When general lighting is at its maximum strength, interior design companies try to make sure it achieves a fairly even light throughout a room. By night, interior design companies will try to create atmosphere and mood by including a feature to dim general lighting to a low level and raise feature lighting. For maximum effect, interior design companies will make sure the contrast between different light sources is high. Alternatively, some London clients request a soft, inviting light, similar to that produced by candlelight; under these circumstances, the interior design company must ensure that the contrast between feature and general lighting is less marked.
